Built in 1602, St Paul Catholic Church was the greatest of Macau's churches. Located at the top of a hill, the structure was the largest church in Asia at the time and was acclaimed as ?The Vatican of the Far East?. Its existence was meant to express the triumph of the Roman Catholic Church through the ornate grandeur of the buildings.
The church was made of wood, and it was brilliantly decorated and furnished. The facade of carved stone was built in the 1620s by Japanese Christian craftsmen who were refugees after the religion was wiped out in Japan. The design of this church facade is unique in the world, as it is one that integrates oriental decorative motifs on a western Baroque-Mannerist facade. Unfortunately, a violent typhoon hit Macau in 1835 and the church caught fire leaving only the beautiful granite façade and a grand staircase of 68 stone steps leading up to it.
Today the facade is reinforced with concrete and steel in a way that preserves its aesthetic integrity. A steel stairway allows tourists to climb up to the top of the facade from the rear to get a closer look at the stone carvings and to enjoy a panoramic view of the city below. In 2005, the ruins were officially listed as part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built in the 1617, Mount Fortress is located centrally on the Macau Peninsular, making it a strategic defense mechanism with an excellent vantage point. The fortress was one of the principle military facilities of the city. It fended off not only the pirates, but also the invasion of the Dutch in 1622. Mount fortress was also the residence of the first Portuguese Governor, Francisco Mascarenhas.
The Fortress was a restricted military facility up until 1965 when it was turned into the weather observatory. Restoration of the walls and ramparts took place in phases across the 1990s which included work to maintain the stability of the fortress structure. In 1998 when the Macau Museum was introduced to the site, Mount Fortress has become one of the most visited attractions of Macau.
