Located in Kuah Town and next to the jetty, Eagle Square is the place that reflects origin of Langkawi's name. The square is marked by a massive 12-meter sculpture of a reddish brown eagle which is poised to take off. Langkawi's name has been derived from reddish brown eagle, because in old Malay language Helang means Eagle, and Kawi stands for reddish brown.
So this manmade statue of the eagle placed on a huge star shaped concrete platform has been created to reflect this background of the island where an eagle is the symbol of Langkawi.
So what can you expect here? Eagle Square is located on the right side of Kuah Jetty and within a short walking distance from there. The square covers a landscaped area of about 19-acres that has covered terraces, beautiful small ponds, fountains, footbridges, shops & eateries, and covered pavilions where events are held.
But the highlight of Eagle Square is its awesome view of the bay that opens out to the sea with the backdrop of mountains. From Eagle Square, you can see the ferries plying across the bay. And if you are arriving to Kuah town by a ferry (i.e. by the sea), you will sea this gigantic model of the eagle facing the waters greeting you as you approach the jetty. Note that it can be really hot here during the mid day..3 sq.km with specially landscaped gardens having many local trees, shrubs and herbs.
Air Hangat (also spelled as Ayer Hangat) Village is a modern cultural complex located 14km north of Kuah Town. The center of the attraction here is the three-tiered hot water spring wells. Most interesting part is that it is a natural salt water hot spring which is rare and can be found only in three other countries in the world. While fresh water hot springs are common and can be seen in several places, but not the salt water hot springs.
Earlier the village was known as Telaga Air Hangat meaning Hot Spring Well when essentially the hot water spring was the only tourist attraction here. The complex has been upgraded recently after three years of renovation work. In addition to the hot spring being converted into a three tier well, it now includes Jacuzzi where natural hot saltwater is pumped in, small ponds & fountains in landscaped gardens, cultural shows, restaurant, selling souvenir and gift stalls etc.
Mahsuri?s Tomb is the crypt of the legendary Princess Mahsuri. Located in the village of Mawat, 12km from Kuah, it is also known as Makam Mahsuri. Most of the island?s natural attractions have fables attached in true Malay style and Mahsuri?s Tomb is probably its most famous legend.
The story begins with the beautiful Mahsuri, a maiden (or princess by some accounts) born over 200 years ago, who married the love of her life during a time of conflict with the Siamese. Her husband went off to fight in the war and her mother-in-law, jealous of her beauty, vengefully accused Mahsuri of adultery. Mahsuri protested her innocence but the village elders tried the young girl, found her guilty and sentenced her to death. With her dying breath, Mahsuri cursed the island with seven generations of bad luck. The legend of Mahsuri supposedly accounts for Langkawi?s relatively ?newfound? success. Judging by its increasing prosperity, the island has survived the curse.
Located centrally in Padang Matsirat and close to the Langkawi International Airport, Atma Alam Batik Art Village is a complex that showcases a wide array of exclusively handmade as well as block printed batik art that includes dress materials, paintings and handicraft products. The long L-shaped single storied building set up in a half-acre sprawling compound has been built in traditional Malaysian architecture with slanted triangular roofs.
It has been established by the couple Aza Osman (an oil painter) and his wife Roshadah Yusof, also known as Sada who herself is a reputed Batik artist and designer. They moved to Langkawi together in 1987 and founded the Batik Art Village. They both live and work here. Aza spent 15 years in Europe, mostly in Italy. Having studied and learned fine arts, he returned to his homeland to share his experience and skills. Sada on the other hand had been a self taught well established batik artist. Her batik artwork are commissioned at most of the luxury resorts in the island.
