Trishaws were predominantly an evolution of the Japanese' rickshaws (man-pulled carriers) in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation. Many of the early trishaw riders originated from the Fujian Province in China where members of these dialect groups were relatively late immigrants to Singapore.

Trishaws today have become part of Singapore's cultural heritage. Though trishaws are no longer a common means of travel for locals, this 3-wheeled vehicle can still be seen along the small alleys of Singapore's cultural enclaves to let visitors experience the Singapore of yesteryear.
