Start off your tour by enjoying a scenic drive around Singapore's colonial and civic district. The Civic District is known as the historic birthplace of modern Singapore and it is part of master plan created by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822. For here, you will get to look at some of the important historical buildings such as the Parliament House, Old Supreme Court, Padang, Cricket Club and City Hall.
Visit Kuan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple - a popular place of worship for local devotees of Kuan Yin or Guan Yin, the Chinese goddess of mercy. En route to Chinatown by visiting the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum is a living cultural monument in the heart of Chinatown featuring exhibitions relating religious arts and culture of Singapore. It also houses the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic in a stupa composed of 320kg of gold donated by devotees. Along the streets of Chinatown, have some food sampling of local delicacies such as the bakwa (roasted pork).
Thereafter, proceed to the Malay precinct of Kampong Glam and have an enjoyable tour around the gazetted conservation area. Once the historic seat of Malay royalty in Singapore, it is a golden ethnic enclave worth exploring for its depth in architecture, exotic ornaments and palatable pleasures. There are colourful temples co-exist side by side with churches and mosques.
Then, visit Little India. Its charm lies in the fact that many of olden-day trades can still be found by its roadsides and alleys. Visit the roadside stalls and alleys where you can find treasure trove of decorative items, foodstuff, traditional Indian spices and apparel. Thereafter, we head to Tekka Market, a traditional food centre and wet market commonly found in Singapore for a quick walkabout. Have a taste of their local roti prata and teh Tarik before visiting Sri Krishnan Temple.
Proceed on a local hawker stall to have lunch (meal at own cost).
Then, discover a repository of Peranakan history and culture by visiting privately owned gallery/shophouses of an old generation Baba / nonya. Be fascinated on their collection of antiques on display, ranging from traditional ceramics, crockery, costumes, furniture, beautifully beaded slippery to photographs of Singapore's earlier generations of Babas and Bibiks. Sample some Peranakan Kueys as dessert as you end your cultural gourmet journey.
The China Club Singapore is an elegant, members-only club, built atop the 52nd floor of Singapore's premium commercial tower, The Capital Tower, located in the Central Business District.
